#17. DIY Faux Stainless Steel Backsplash

A quick one.  DIY stove backsplash.  Client bought gas cheap stove and metal table to put the stove on.  The wall behind the stove consists of two parts, a wall section, and an open section with iron grille.  The wall need to be protected in some way, and the open section need to be covered up to keep out rain and wind.  An "industrial" stainless steel look is desired, however, stainless steel is expensive.  Cheaper galvanized zinc sheets can be an alternative.  How long they last with constant exposure to heat and cooking coil and cleaning is unknown.

Materials needed:

  1. Galvanized zinc sheet/foil - 3ft x 8ft roll costs RM23
  2. Screws to fix to the wall
  3. Foil/ flashing tape
  4. Backer board for the top part - used free throw away plastic signboard

First, the foil was cut off site into two pieces measureing 3ft x 4ft each.
Then, off to the site!
Here's the worksite.  Pushed the stove and table out of the way, put one of the cut pieces to get approximate location.

There's about 65cm ledge above the wall before the iron grill starts, so this has to be covered too.  Some bending of the foil will be needed.

Holes drilled on the foil, then screwed into place on the ledge first, then all around to the wall.  The bending part was difficult and kind of sloppy.

Then the edges were taped with foil tape all around

For the upper part I didn't take the progress pics.  I cut a piece of old plastic signboard to size, put the foil on it, and just taped around.  This was then put up on the ledge.

Holes were drilled at various spots, and tie wire used to secure to the iron grille.

The final pic is below.

All in all about half a day's worth of effort.  Not bad!
If I were to do this again, I would use a backer board for the bottom part too, and somehow pre-bend it before installation.  And there it is, a DIY faux stainless steel backsplash.
